Navigation licence
This course is designed to teach you all you need to know to operate jet skis and recreational craft up to 6 metres in length, with an engine suitable for the vessel in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. This qualification will allow you to undertake daytime sailing, as long as you do not venture further than 2 nautical miles from a port, marina or place of shelter.
In accordance with Royal Decree 875/2014, a two-hour theory session must be undertaken, in which the practical content will be introduced. You will also learn about navigation restrictions, maritime traffic regulations and navigation in ports, Region A lateral marks, boat handling techniques to avoid sudden movements and maintain the correct course in relation to the swell, the rules (included in Annex IV) of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, and basic concepts regarding the use of a portable VHF radio. This theoretical training will be delivered on the training vessel itself.
A 4-hour practical session will be held, involving continuous navigation, during which the following will be taught: use of safety equipment and checking key points on the vessel before setting sail, identification and operation of the propulsion system, starting and checking the engine, handling ropes and tying basic knots, manoeuvring in port, anchoring and retrieving the anchor, amongst other topics.
The theoretical part will take place from 11 am to 1pm, and the practical session from 1.30 pm to 5.30 pm, with a 30-minute break for lunch.
